BABY GIRL GIFTS
Purchasing a baby girl gift for your own daughter,
granddaughter, family member or friend can be a challenge. Depending on the age,
interest, and popularity of an item, finding the right baby girl gift is not
always easy! I have been to enough baby showers and first birthdays where there
is a popular gift that was purchased by three different people at the baby
shower and birthday. The funny thing was that all three baby girl gifts were not
even of interest to the little princess and all were returned. I will go over
some processes and ideas for baby girl gifts that you will hopefully find useful
in picking out the perfect baby girl gift and making that little princess a
happy girl!
Process of Finding the Right Baby Girl Gift
When you find out you will be purchasing a gift for the baby girl in your life,
you now have the task of finding the right gift! The following are helpful
guidelines to use in finding that special baby girl gift:
1) Leave yourself time: Tip one is to make sure and leave enough time to be able
to bring or ship the gift for the event, whether a birthday, baby shower, or
special holiday or occasion. The day you find out or know you need to purchase a
gift in the future, it is important to give yourself enough time to purchase and
wrap that gift. Don't wait until the last second as you may be frantically
looking for any gift you can find or the "right" gift that is sold out in
stores. Always error on the side of having more time and making sure your
shopping is completed early as you may have some investigative work to do in
finding the right baby girl gift, unique to that princess :) There are a lot of
ways to shop, whether you are purchasing the baby girl gift online or at a
store. Again, just make sure you have the time to complete and wrap the gift or
read the online messages on how long it takes to ship the gift.
2) Investigate for the right baby girl gift: The best way to find out what to
get the baby girl is to ask her or her parents yourself (unless of course you
are her parent or family member). Friends can ask the mommy or daddy as they
should know what their baby girl has as interests and hobbies. It can be from
what they watch on TV, what they play with to what they collect or focus on. My
sister's baby girl loves princesses and has just about everything you could
imagine. During her fourth birthday, half of the gifts that were given to her
had to be returned since they already had the toys, books and princess items.
Again, asking the parents in what the baby girl does not have is always the
safest bet and you will be getting them something they really want.
3) If you are the baby girl's parent or family member, just ask him what he
would like: A great way is to get the catalogs that we all get in the mail or
newspaper and to bookmark the pages that your daughter points out to you. Then
you can make a list for others in what your baby girl wants and distribute it to
friends and family. That way, you know you are getting things that your little
one will enjoy whether it is for their birthday, holiday season or just because.
4) Pay attention when visiting the baby girl's house: Next time you are at the
home of the baby girl you need a gift for, check out the following to choose the
right baby girl gift:
What videos does the baby girl watch?
Is there a chosen theme of his room that she picked and enjoys (e.g., flowers,
fairies, castles, princesses, color scheme)?
What types of toys does the baby girl like to play with (e.g., teddy bears vs
dolls, Disney figures vs. musical instruments)?
What types of books does the baby girl enjoy reading?
Does the baby girl like to be challenged with puzzles or with gross motor skills
such as playing hop-scotch or dance to a video?
What does the baby girl already have as for toys, books, puzzles as you may want
to get them something of interest but unique. The more information you get, the
more you can make an educated guess on the best baby girl gift for your special
little princess.
5) Safety Issue: When purchasing any baby girl
gift, make sure it is something in the right age group of the little one you are
purchasing for. Almost every toy has the age group listed on the box as you need
to make sure it is not going to be a safety hazard (i.e., chocking on a little
piece of plastic for smaller girls). At the same time, you want to make sure you
are getting a toy that is challenging for the person you are purchasing the toy
for. It is a great idea to look up on the site for any baby gift recalls at
http://www.cpsc.gov/. Again, make sure the gift you are getting has not recently
been recalled due to a defect as it happens all the time. The site of About.com
also has great information about toy recalls.
6) Noise/Piece/Packaging Level: Unless you really want to put one on your friend
or family member, try and be respectful of how noisy or how many pieces consists
of the baby girl's gift. My sister’s daughter was given a 100 piece kitchen set
and the first night I had to help her clean up 100 pieces (cleaning took longer
than the playing). Although many baby girl gifts may have sound ranges (usually
two- medium or loud) if they have sound at all. Just make sure that any baby
girl gift that does make sound is something that shuts off easily and is not too
annoying. Purchasing loud instruments or automated toys with blaring speakers
should be approved by the parents first. If you are the parent, you may want to
think of these things before the purchase :) Another new issue is the packaging
of gifts. You may want to take a look at seeing if you need three different
types of screwdrivers just to get the baby girl gift out of the package.
Recently, I spent over three hours putting together my niece’s present from her
4th birthday which also took help.
7) Age Group: An important factor in the purchase of a baby girl gift is how old
the child is. I have seen so many parties and holidays when the baby girl
receives something for someone much older or younger than they are. My niece
received a toy for a ten year old at four. In most cases, there is a reason why
the makers place age of use on the packaging. Sometimes it is a safety issue
while other times it is patience and learning issue. Nothing is more frustrating
for a baby girl to get a gift and want to play with it, finding out it is too
difficult for them to master. Although, working through frustration is good for
kids, there is a point when it is too frustrating and can affect their temporary
confidence.
8) Seasonal Baby Girl Gifts: When it is cold winter, it is probably not a great
idea to get a baby girl gift that is an outside toy (unless fitting for the
season). For instance, an outside bounder is not good for a little girl in
Michigan in the winter when it is below zero. Remember that most kids want to
open and play with their gift (if it is a toy) right away. Just play attention
to the season you are in or going into and you will have a happy baby girl.
9) Clothing Not Always Best: Clothing is a hit and miss baby girl gift. At
times, it can work out if you know what to get the baby girl, but many times the
parents are then obligated to return and take back the clothing. Remember that
all of our tastes are different so what you may think is cute or fitting but may
not be liked by the parents of the baby girl. The important thing with clothing
is to know who the child is as well as to ask the parents on what would be best
for clothing (if you want to purchase clothing for the baby girl). That way, you
can't go wrong other than the size :)
